🛠️ MISSION POSSIBLE: Engineering Vehicles for Emergency Response

robots and code
Seventh grade engineering students put their skills to the test as they designed, built, and evaluated autonomous vehicles intended to assist people during natural disasters.

The project challenged students to create vehicles capable of operating without direct human control and delivering critical supplies to individuals who may be stranded until Search and Rescue teams can arrive.

After weeks of planning, building, and problem-solving, students tested their vehicles in real-world simulations throughout the school hallways. Teams observed how their designs navigated obstacles, traveled independently, and completed assigned tasks while collecting valuable data to improve their prototypes.

Combining engineering, technology, and critical thinking, the project provided students with an opportunity to creatively solve a real-world problem.

TYING TOGETHER FRIENDSHIP & PATIENCE

teaching lesson
Designed and led by SMHS student teaching assistant, Samantha Thompson, grade 7 art students were introduced to the Chinese Staircase bracelet, a classic design created by tying a series of knots with colorful embroidery floss to design a spiral pattern and ultimately form a friendship bracelet.

As they worked through the knot-tying process, students learned the value of patience, not only with the project itself but also with themselves as they mastered something new.

Students embraced the challenge and are creating something they can be proud to say they made by hand. Stay tuned for a look at the finished projects!

BONJOUR from CHEZ ANTOINE!

French club
What could possibly be better than a visit to a French café on a beautiful day in the month of May?

The French Club traded the classroom walls for café chairs and headed to Chez Antoine for a true French breakfast experience, and oui, the only language spoken was French!

From the moment we arrived, Antoine and his wonderful staff stayed completely “en français,” giving our students the authentic challenge of ordering, speaking, and living the language in real time. And guess what? The students rose to the occasion beautifully.

Sitting outside at little tables, soaking up the sunshine like we were on a Parisian sidewalk café, students enjoyed everything from croque-monsieur to chocolat chaud, chantilly, and café latté. Let’s just say… nobody left hungry!

Un énorme merci à Antoine and his team for giving us such a warm and authentic experience, and thank you to Mr. Kelly for accompanying us on our delicious adventure.

Bref… on s’est bien régalés, bien amusés, et pendant quelques heures… Sandwich Middle High School had a little air de France!
