New Oak Ridge Mural Has Local Touch

A man in denim overalls stands next to a wall mural with flowing blue and gray waves.
The Oak Ridge School's new mural is nearing completion, and we can’t wait for students to see the finished piece! The school is grateful for local artist (and SPS dad) Nick Zaremba for constructing a mural on the school's first floor with very much an ocean/local scenery theme.. For more information, check out the below video where some of our third grade students interviewed Mr. Zaremba and asked thoughtful questions about his work. A very special THANK YOU to our amazing muralist, Nick, and our generous PTA for funding this wonderful project!

Stomp Rockets Soar at Forestdale

Children engage in a stomp rocket activity in the Forestdale MultiPurpose Room, with 1st grade teacher Aimee Webb observing.
On Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, April 14th, 16th, and 17th, volunteers from the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History visited Forestdale's K-2 students to help design stomp rockets. Building stomp rockets is a hands-on way for students to experience core ideas from engineering by designing, testing, and improving a simple system. As they construct the rocket and launcher, students explore how force and air pressure (a basic Newton's Third Law of Motion idea) make the rocket move, then experiment with variables like fin shape, rocket length, and launch angle to see what flies higher or farther. Through this process, they engage in the engineering design cycle, planning, building, testing, and revising, while practicing problem-solving, making predictions, and learning from trial and error in a fun way.

Local Leaders Visit SMHS Civics Classes

Sandwich Middle High School 8th Grade Civics students continue their work on Civic Action Projects, researching real issues that impact their community. This year's projects include road safety, affordable housing, school traffic, and bike safety.

As part of this ongoing work, students welcomed local leaders into the classroom to share their expertise and perspectives. Guest speakers included Town Manager Bud Dunham, Assistant Town Manager Heather Harper, Recreation Director Tricia MacDonald, Director of Public Works Paul Tilton, Director of Community Services Guy Boucher, Library Director Diane Costagliola, and Communications Coordinator Cait Fogarty.

These visits provided students with valuable insight into how local government operates and how different departments collaborate to address community needs.

SMHS thanks our local leaders for volunteering their time and sharing their expertise with our students.

Digital Wellness Lab Coming to SPS

We’re excited to share an upcoming community-wide event! On Tuesday, April 28th, The Sandwich Public Schools are partnering with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab to host A Day of Digital Wellbeing.

The Digital Wellness Lab will be working with both Oak Ridge and Sandwich Middle High School students throughout the school day, offering age-appropriate workshops and presentations that focus on:
● Understanding how online spaces are designed and how they affect us
● Building awareness about our digital habits and choices
● Developing skills to feel more balanced and confident online
● Recognizing that we have the power to make intentional decisions about technology use

This day is meant to create a shared knowledge base that students, faculty, and parents can use to discuss balanced digital media use at home and in school. As such, the student workshops will be followed by an evening talk at 5:30 pm at the Oak Ridge School open to the greater Sandwich community featuring speakers from the Boston Children’s Digital Wellness Lab.

The evening presentation is an opportunity for families to collect tools for learning alongside their children as we all explore how technology impacts our well-being. Please join us!
