While we are currently buried under mountains of snow and navigating widespread power outages, we hope spring is somewhere out there waiting patiently to make its arrival — preferably with sunshine and temperatures above freezing. As we dig out and thaw out, we also ask families to keep the upcoming spring testing dates in mind.
Students in designated grades will participate in MCAS testing on the dates listed above. We are sharing the schedule early to help families avoid absences whenever possible. Strong attendance during testing is important, as these assessments provide valuable information about student learning and school progress.
Thank you for your support!

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, members of SMHS’s HOSA (Future Health Professionals, formerly Health Occupations Students of America) chapter created handmade cards to thank local healthcare workers for their dedication and service.
The thoughtful cards were delivered to local healthcare workers, spreading positivity and recognition to those working on the front lines of care.
This meaningful project highlighted HOSA’s commitment to service, leadership, and community involvement, while allowing students to express their gratitude in a creative and personal way.
If you would like to join or learn more about HOSA, please reach out to science teacher, Ms. Melissa Kestenbaum, or stop by her classroom in C337.

Valentine’s Day brought lots of smiles and stories as SMHS students visited Forestdale classrooms for a special read-aloud celebration. Our middle school readers shared favorite stories with younger students, spreading a love of reading and a little holiday cheer along the way. Afterward, students created colorful bookmarks for their new reading buddies, giving them a creative keepsake to inspire future reading adventures.
Thank you to Ms. Crociati, Ms. Binns, Ms. Cavanagh, and Ms. Boen for warmly welcoming us. The trip was accompanied by middle school teachers Ms. Silvestri and Ms. Strano, school counselor Ms. Alexander, and administrator Mr. Clarkin, making it a wonderful day of connection and community across our schools.

On February 11, Sandwich Middle High School welcomed Mr. Ryan Saklad, PhD student in Computer Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), to speak with students about the real-world applications of Artificial Intelligence.
Mr. Saklad earned his BS in Business from WPI with minors in Computer Science and Economics, became WPI’s first Master’s graduate in Artificial Intelligence, and is now pursuing his PhD focused on reasoning and causality in large language models. In addition to his academic work, he has built and integrated AI tools across industries, including small businesses, law firms, and venture capital firms.
Students learned about the differences between AI in industry and AI in research, the skills needed to thrive in technology fields, and the importance of initiative, communication, networking, and adaptability. Mr. Saklad's key message:
“Nobody gives you permission. Start building.”
Challenging students to take ownership of their learning and reminding them that no one hands you confidence, expertise, or opportunity, Mr. Saklad underscored the importance of trying, failing, improving, and continuing to build.
This Knight Time Hack is part of the authentic learning opportunities available through the Computer Science Innovation Career Pathway at SMHS, which provides students exposure to emerging technologies, industry professionals, and real-world applications of computer science.
Through guest speakers, project-based learning, and career-connected experiences, SMHS continues to prepare students not just for college, but for the rapidly evolving future of work.

After months of training, Blue and his sister, Sandy (Oak Ridge School’s comfort dog), demonstrated that they are well-mannered, confident, and obedient members of our school community.
