Happy New Year!

We entered 2026 with a running start. Literally. Our winter BOKS session, the before school fitness program for kids started bright and early Monday morning in the gym. Students who traveled into school by bus were greeted with late buses and slow travel due to slick road conditions. Once all students safely arrived, our 2026 portion of the school year began.

While the winter conditions are no fun for the adults to drive in, they provide a huge amount of entertainment to our PK-2nd graders. We take advantage of this fun outdoors time, and will go out as often as it is safely possible. Please be sure to send in boots, snow-pants, warm jacket, mittens and hats for your student so he/she can fully enjoy the snow play time with their peers. If your child is missing some of these items, have them check the lost and found, which is accumulating a good number of items daily.

Last winter weather reminder - with the wintry weather, we are noticing the fire lanes and crosswalk being used as parking spaces. To ensure the safety and well being of all our students, staff and visitors, please remember to park in parking lot spaces only.

I hope you enjoy this week's news and photos. Please reach out if you have any feed back or questions about any content.

Teaching Dr. Quinn

Marlee in Mrs. Tompkins/Mrs. Weiner's class is a self taught expert on Diamondback Terrapins. Here she is explaining to Dr. Quinn all the info she knows about Shelly, the Terrapin that the class is fostering for the winter. Their turtle came to the classroom when it was about the size of a quarter. It is now about the size of a mini-bagel. If you would like to know more about these turtles, reach out to any 2nd grade student for some detailed info.

Lunch in Ms. Schofield's office

Students in Mrs. Eastman's first grade class have the option of recording their home reading onto nightly reading logs. Students who complete these reading logs and pass them in are gifted with lunch in Ms. Schofield's office with a friend. To jazz up the office, there is a disco ball and music provided by KPop Demon Hunters (or other Kidz Bop request). Students chat about their current read and favorite part about first grade, among other topics. While Lennon would love to be a part of the eating, she is typically crated while the munching takes place. She willingly cleans up any scraps that might have been left behind by the hungry first graders, and happily receives pats for a good job.

Math around the school

Walking through the classrooms at Forestdale, you can see so may different, hands on ways that students learn and interact with math. Images above and below show students doing both independent and interactive math activities. Independent hands on activities allow the student to work on and practice newly learned skills or reinforce and solidify previously learned skills. Partner games and group games do the same, but also incorporate social skills of taking turns and being a good player/team mate.

Students still do some traditional paper pencil math activities, which you may see come home. These hands on activities are just as important and are ones that cannot be sent home easily. These activities reinforce that children learn through play, and are an essential component to Forestdale's daily math instruction. When students miss time in the classroom (illness, vacation), they miss practicing these essential social skills that the students fine tune through play. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you would like some ideas of how to incorporate these activities at home.

Writing/Phonics skills

Students below are working on their phonics and writing skills. Phonics and sight word (heart word) practice is shown here using whiteboards and elkonin boxes, paper and pencil, and just whiteboard markers on the desks! (Don't worry - they just erase right off!). Second graders this week got to bring in stuffies and write a fictional story about their stuffed animal, an extension of the animal writing unit they are currently working on in reading/ARC.

A Peek at some Specialists

Note - not all specialists are depicted here..

Below are some snapshots of students busy at work in the specialists classrooms this past week. Activities this week included stretching and basketball in PE, coding, building and math games in Tech, Boom Whackers in music, Read aloud in library, and a pollinator activity in Science.

Bus Shout Outs

Shout outs to TWO buses this week for outstanding bus behavior.

Bus #13 got a shout out for being so calm, quiet and respectful for the driver on the tricky ride in on Monday. She was so very proud of how helpful the kids were! The students got a tunnel of high fives as they exited their bus Monday morning for doing such a great job!

Bus #4 had an amazing drive into school Tuesday morning. All students demonstrated spot-on behavior, and each earned a special bus sticker for doing a great job.

Way to go Bus #13 and Bus #4! Keep up the great work.
