Literacy in Pre-6

Reading and writing is a joyful experience for students and teachers in the Sandwich Public Schools. We are committed to teaching all students how to read and also to instilling a love of reading that will last a lifetime.

Our literacy curriculum is implemented through a workshop approach, with ample time devoted to reading, writing, word study and oral language each day, beginning in preschool. Students learn in whole groups, small groups and through individual interactions with teachers and classmates.

We believe that, for all students:

  • reading and writing should be a joyful and rewarding experience
  • a rich literacy environment that nurtures a love of reading and writing is a basic right
  • a variety of authentic assessments will enable teachers to teach responsively, considering social emotional needs along with academic needs
  • daily reading, writing, thinking and talking about text will be supported by powerful teaching so that all students can read and write at grade level or beyond

Students and teachers are supported in the acquisition of literacy by highly qualified and well trained literacy coaches. The literacy coaches provide direct instruction to students as well as curriculum leadership and professional development for teachers.

Our students receive additional support from a highly qualified academic support team, including Reading Recovery teachers and special education teachers who provide supplemental instruction.

There is additional information at each school's website in the Teaching and Learning Section to provide an even broader picture of literacy in each school.
