English Language Arts

English Language Arts is an all-encompassing label for the teaching of reading and writing. The Massachusetts Frameworks include the following strands:

      • Reading
      • Writing
      • Language
      • Speaking and Listening

There are ten anchor standards in each strand, and the frameworks list specific expectations for students at each grade level, with each of the grade level standards connected to one of the ten anchor standards.

The Council for Great City Schools has designed Parent Roadmaps which provide clear outlines of the ELA Common Core State Standards.

Literacy Teaching and Learning in Grades Pre K-8 is guided by our partnership with the Lesley University Center for Reading Recover and Literacy Collaborative. We use the Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, a Tool for Assessment, Planning, and Teaching, in conjunction with the 2011 Massachusetts ELA Frameworks. The Continuum provides a comprehensive list of Behaviors and Understandings to Notice, Teach and Support, and organizes them according to Instructional Contexts.

Additional description of the Instructional Contexts for Instruction in Grades K-6 is on the Elementary Literacy page, and more information about Literacy Collaborative is on the Partnership page.
